But clear is no longer the only choice.

Today, chandelier crystals can also be used to introduce wonderful splashes of colour. From subtle sage green and delicate pink to dramatic red, jewel-like emerald, rich blue, mysterious black and shimmering Aurora Borealis finishes, changing the colour of your chandelier drops can completely transform the character of a light fitting.

The Timeless Beauty of Clear Chandelier Crystals

There is a very good reason why clear chandelier crystals have remained popular for so long.

Clear glass works beautifully with almost any style of chandelier. It can complement an elaborate antique fitting just as successfully as a simple modern light.

Rather than introducing a strong colour of its own, clear faceted glass interacts with the light around it. As daylight, lamplight or chandelier bulbs strike the different facets, reflections and flashes of light help bring the fitting to life.

This makes clear crystals particularly suitable when you want the chandelier itself to remain the main feature.

They can look wonderful with brass, antique brass, chrome, silver and other metallic finishes, and their neutrality means that changing your wallpaper, paint colours, curtains or furniture does not necessarily mean changing your chandelier.

Aurora Borealis – Somewhere Between Clear and Colour

If you love the elegance of clear glass but would like something with a little more visual excitement, Aurora Borealis chandelier crystals – often shortened to AB crystals – are a wonderful alternative.

Aurora Borealis crystals have an iridescent finish that produces changing flashes of colour as the light catches the surface.

Instead of displaying one dominant colour, they can produce a kaleidoscope-like mixture of tones depending upon the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

This makes AB particularly versatile.

On a traditional chandelier they can introduce a subtle twist without completely changing its character. On a modern light fitting, meanwhile, they can create a much more playful and contemporary appearance.

They are also particularly effective where there is plenty of natural daylight, as their changing reflections can become part of the decoration of the room itself.

Green chandelier crystals can give a light fitting an entirely different personality depending upon the shade selected.

Soft greens can create a calm, elegant look, while emerald and deeper jewel tones can make the chandelier considerably more dramatic.

Green crystals can look particularly attractive alongside antique brass and gold-toned fittings, but there are no fixed rules. Teal and peacock greens can also look striking against chrome and silver.

Blue Chandelier Crystals – Cool, Elegant and Striking

Blue chandelier crystals can range from delicate aqua tones through to teal and rich cobalt blue.

Colour does not necessarily need to match the room exactly, either. Sometimes a contrasting chandelier is far more interesting than one designed to disappear into its surroundings.

Pale pink crystals can appear soft, romantic and delicate, particularly when combined with clear glass. Stronger hot pink and raspberry shades are much more contemporary and eye-catching.

Replacing only a handful of clear drops with red ones can be enough to introduce a completely new accent. Alternatively, a complete collection of red leaves, icicles, ovals and orbs can turn the chandelier itself into a colourful centrepiece.

Red is also particularly effective for seasonal displays, celebrations and decorative projects where you actively want the crystals to attract attention.

Black Chandelier Crystals – Dramatic and Unexpected

Black may not be the first colour that comes to mind when thinking about chandelier crystals, which is precisely why it can be so effective.

Black chandelier crystals can give an ornate fitting a dramatically different personality.

Combine black drops with clear crystals for contrast, or mix them with purple and deeper jewel colours for a Gothic-inspired look.

They can also provide an interesting way to update an older chandelier that no longer suits a room. Rather than replacing the entire fitting, changing its crystal drops can sometimes give it a completely new identity.

Mixed Colours – Forget the Rules!

One of the most enjoyable approaches is simply not to choose one colour at all.

A chandelier does not have to contain twelve identical drops.

You can combine clear, AB, green, blue, pink, purple, red and other colours, while also mixing shapes such as leaves, icicles, torpedoes, ovals and orbs.

Mixed crystals can transform a chandelier into something completely individual.

They are particularly useful if you enjoy an eclectic or bohemian decorating style, but carefully selected mixtures can work equally well in contemporary interiors. Two or three related colours can create a coordinated effect, while a full rainbow mixture creates something much more playful.

There really is no requirement for every chandelier drop to match.

You Don't Have to Choose Between Clear and Colour

Perhaps the most important point is that choosing colourful chandelier crystals does not mean abandoning clear ones.

Some of the most effective arrangements combine the two.

For example, you could retain the majority of your original clear chandelier crystals and replace every third or fourth drop with a coloured one. This introduces colour while preserving the traditional appearance of the chandelier.

Another option is to use clear crystals around the main body of the fitting and coloured drops along the bottom.

You could also introduce just one colour – emerald green, cobalt blue, pink or red, for example – amongst clear glass. If you later fancy a change, simply swap those accent drops for another colour.

It is rather like changing cushions or accessories in a room: a relatively small alteration can create a surprisingly different overall effect.

Think About Shape as Well as Colour

Colour naturally attracts attention, but the shape and size of the crystal are just as important.

A long icicle chandelier crystal creates a very different silhouette from a rounded orb, elegant oval or decorative leaf-shaped crystal.

Longer drops can emphasise the height of a chandelier, while broader shapes add visual weight.

You can therefore create interest in three different ways:

Replacing missing drops, changing clear crystals for colour, introducing AB pieces or deliberately mixing several designs can give an existing chandelier an entirely new character.

You can be traditional, contemporary, colourful, understated or completely unconventional.
